That was an awesome idea to trade iPods. You've got an extremely thoughtful and innovative mind from what I've read thus far.
I love sharing music with people who've never heard of most of the bands that I listen to. At my hometown dive bars people play nothing but hip hop or classic rock to no end (and as music should say something about the people who listen to it, that's why I don't frequent these bars much anymore - same old people who've not changed...a bit) I actually love classic rock, but it's too dependable - it's always there, it's a given when it comes to quality.
I like to hear new things, so I play only what I'm sure most of the crowd has never heard, even if I have to fork up the extra 50 cents for download, it means that much to me that someone might leave that bar having heard something that made a difference to their musical taste and perhaps their life as well.
I think that, just like that mom dismissed pretty much all of your music based on a couple of bad apples, many people do that and give up too soon - that's the mainstream's fault for being so damn predictable as far as content and quality. I'm glad I've been led off that path to find some interesting and amazing bands who are unknown by the majorities - I've even gotten my stubborn mom to accept some of them as well by making her a mix tape with some of her own old classics incorporated (this was the final winner after months of say "Mom, listen to this song I think you'll like it" with no bait strong enough to tackle.
